Quantum Computing Explained Simply (and Why Crypto Cares)
Qubits, superposition and the post-quantum security question, without the physics degree.
A classical bit is 0 or 1. A qubit can be in a blend of both until measured, and qubits can be linked (entangled) so they behave as one system. That lets quantum computers explore some kinds of problems in ways classical machines cannot.
What they might be good at
- Simulating molecules and materials.
- Certain optimization problems.
- Breaking some kinds of public-key cryptography.
Why crypto cares
Many blockchains rely on cryptography that a large, error-corrected quantum computer could eventually threaten. That is why post-quantum cryptography is being standardized and why chains are researching upgrade paths.
Reality check
Today’s machines are noisy and small. Useful, fault-tolerant quantum computing is a multi-year effort. The right response is preparation, not panic.
