Welcome to the Blockchain Minute
I’m your host, Bill, and today we’re breaking down a fundamental difference between two versions of the internet: Web 2 and Web 3.
If you’ve been scratching your head wondering what all this talk about Web 3 means, you’re not alone. Think of it this way:
• Web 2 is the internet we’ve used for the past two decades — Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube. It’s familiar. It’s centralized. The big guys run the show.
• Web 3, on the other hand, is the new frontier — blockchain, crypto, memes, tokens, and most importantly, community-driven everything.
Let’s break it down.
Web 2: Controlled by the Few
Take Amazon. They decide what products get shown, what prices to offer, and how your experience is going to go. Sure, you can leave a review or a comment, but the product pitch? That’s all Amazon. You’re basically reacting to whatever they throw at you.
Facebook gets a little more interactive. You can set up your own page, invite people in, post content, allow (or block) comments. There’s a bit more give and take, but still — the platform makes the rules.
Web 3: Controlled by the Crowd
Now take that idea, crank the dial to 11, and you’ve got Web 3. In Web 3, the community drives the action. It’s not about one central company telling you what’s what — it’s about users building, owning, and governing the space together.
Let’s say I launch a crypto token — we’ll call it BillCoin. I can set the initial price, but after that? It’s the community — not me — that decides what it’s worth. Just like the stock market. If the market likes it, it goes up. If they don’t? Well, they dump it.
This is just like buying AT&T stock. If the service stinks, people sell. If it’s great, people buy. The value is determined by the market, not the issuer. Web 3 works the same way, except now, anyone can be a creator, investor, or contributor.
So What’s the Big Deal?
The biggest shift is this: Web 2 is centralized. Web 3 is decentralized. In Web 2, the power lies with the platforms. In Web 3, the power shifts to the people. And that shift? It scares the hell out of some folks — especially the big players who are used to calling the shots.
But here’s the thing: That’s exactly why Web 3 is exciting. It’s a more democratic, community-powered internet.
And that, folks, is the major difference between Web 2 and Web 3 — brought to you in one minute (okay, maybe two).
